Understanding True Odds
Examples of True Odds
Here are practical examples of True Odds versus payout odds in gambling:
- European roulette straight‑up: probability 1/37; True Odds 36:1; payout 35:1 → house edge ≈ 2.70%.
- Craps odds bet: after a point of 6 or 8, True Odds are 6:5; casinos pay 6:5 on the odds bet portion → 0% edge on that part.
- Blackjack natural: chance ≈ 4.7% (about 1 in 21). Paying 3:2 is closer to fair; 6:5 increases the house edge.
- Sports betting: if a team’s fair win chance is 55%, True Odds imply decimal 1.82 (–122). A book may offer 1.77 (–130), embedding vigorish.
- Slots: True Odds of symbol combos are hidden; RTP and volatility summarize the math that drives the edge.
